Babette’s Feast is usually voted the very best food film of all time, and
for good reason. Set in a remote village in Jutland, it is the story of a
religious family and the French woman who comes to their door looking
for shelter. She is an inspired chef whose skills have been famous in
Revolutionary Paris, from which she has escaped in terror. As the years
go on and the preacher father dies, his spinster daughters keep her on,
serving up simple food. Then one day she comes into a great deal of
money, and decides to spend it on a feast for her new community. The
effect of her food on this repressed and frosty lot is captured with
unforgettable and subtle charm.
