Screen Bites audiences have been delighted and stimulated by festival chairman Robert Golden’s documentary films from the Savouring Europe series for the past three years. Now we have a chance to show his second feature film, The Lake. It has never been screened in England before, and because it was largely filmed on beautiful Lake Orta in Italy, it was the perfect choice to show in the Italian Villa next to Compton Acres’s stunning Italian garden. The Lake tells the story of Anne, an elderly English woman diagnosed with a fatal disease. She leaves her difficult grown up children and returns to the place she found her first love, in Italy after the war. Trying to piece together the story of her lover’s subsequent life, Anne meets a young woman also in love with a handsome Italian and also the subject of his family’s disapproval. Memory and reality blur as she finds people she vaguely remembers, and realises they seem to have a secret to hide. This touching story, written, directed and filmed by Golden with his trademark sensual beauty and specially licensed by Poole Borough Council for this evening's screening, stars the luminous Eve Pearce as Anne, with Tina Gambe as the young teacher, and Screen Bites’ own Tina Ellen Lee as a mysterious stranger. The premiere of The Lake is Screen Bites's first non-food film.
