Milou en Mai was one of Malle’s last films, set on a family estate in rural
France in 1968 during the student uprisings in Paris, Milou, played by
Michel Piccoli, has always lived at home, where his mother (Paulette
Dubos) has just died. The family congregates for the funeral, but all of
France is on strike, so the arrangements keep getting delayed ... and it’s
hot. Milou’s brother, the London correspondent for Le Monde, brings
his wife, played by Dorset-resident Harriet Walter. Relatives turn up
with their own inheritance agendae. A truck driver who can’t deliver his
tomatoes in Paris brings home a nephew who was part of the uprising.
This complex and delightful film has all the feel of summer, something
we have all lacked this year.
