Waitress is one of those films that did well in America, and was sneered
at by trendy London critics. It’s set in a diner in the Deep South, where
Jenna is the ace pie-maker, creating a new pie every time her life
changes direction. Saddled with a possessive and violent husband, she
finds solace with her colleagues, and later in the handsome young doctor
who has arrived in town. It takes a bereavement to make her value
herself – and the audience cheers. The pies are colourful and inventive,
echoing Jenna’s moods in this sometimes funny feel-good movie.
