Katie Holmes first caught the public eye as Joey in the teen soap Dawson’s Creek, and then as the new Mrs Tom Cruise. In this film she is the archetypal teenager with attitude. She has left her Pensylvannia home to move to New York City, and is now living with her Afro- American boyfriend. Thanksgiving is coming and she invites the family to celebrate with her, but she has never cooked before, and her efforts at creating a traditional feast are painful and hilarious. Patricia Clarkson as her terminally ill mother won the Vancouver and Boston Critics awards and was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and the Screen Writers Guild awards for her performance. Sean Hayes from Will and Grace is a priceless dog-owning neighbour and Pieces of April won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival. It is funny, warm-hearted and sometimes painfully honest.
